Start in Shinjuku, then go to Nakano for used gear and Ginza for premium brands.
- Shinjuku: The densest cluster of large electronics chains and specialist new/used dealers such as Map Camera.
- Nakano: Specialist used camera and lens shops such as Fujiya Camera, popular for used lenses and accessories.
- Watch out: Compare the effective price (sticker price, tax-free refund, points and warranty), not just the tag.
Japan's tax-free system changes on 1 November 2026
From 1 November 2026, visitors pay the full price including 10% consumption tax at the store. The tax is refunded after customs confirms at departure (airport or seaport) that the goods are leaving Japan, within 90 days of purchase. The minimum is ¥5,000 before tax per store. Refund methods and timing depend on the store, so ask at checkout and keep your receipts.
